When I was in college I would often skip homework or studying for a test.
Why? Because I was inspired to work on something else. Inspiration is a terrible thing to waste. Work when you are inspired, and you are bound to build something beyond your normal capabilities.
Have you ever set aside an hour to work on something, and completely lost track of time? If you look down at your clock and several hours have passed, that is inspiration taking effect.
Find Things That Inspire You
Before I designed websites I worked in marketing and sales. Most of my day was spent working in spreadsheets, and talking on the phone. Not once did I loose myself in the task. However, I always looked forward to the end of the day when I would design landing pages to split-test. I’d spend time perfecting the graphics in Photoshop, reading articles about copywriting, I even taught myself a bit of jQuery so I could add a button that scrolled to the top.
That was when I decided that I should be building websites. I left for Chicago, joined The Starter League and began my career building things on the internet.
Start Immediately
If you are inspired start on your project immediately. Don’t give yourself, or anyone else, time to convince you otherwise. Drew Wilson, who is the king of building stuff, starts on his projects immediately. He even wrote a book about doing so—in eight days.
Follow Through
Don’t run out of steam in the middle of a project. What is all that time worth if you have nothing to show for it? If it is a big project take screenshots and write about what you learned. Don’t let your inspiration go to waste.
So whether you are designing, coding or writing—do it while you are inspired.
